Mayme Kratz DOCUMENTARY
MAYME KRATZ / STAND STILL
Gnosis believes that creativity is the essence of human life: we are moved by creative messages. However, creative output, valued emotive vision, must be nurtured and cultivated through dedication and discipline. Artistic expression is born of a patient search for intellectual and artistic excellence and fulfillment. Kratz’s work is a reflection of her close examination of existence, memory and the measure of time - what existence entails, what it means to be human. She bares her soul and touches our own as well by making us pay attention.

ONWARD & UPWARD!
The first order of 2010 is to determine how best to distribute the rest of our stash of CONSTRUCTIONS: BUILDINGS IN ARIZONA BY ALFRED NEWMAN BEADLE. For goodness' sake, this gem is the only written resource on this beloved and highly respected architect. Al, the only Case Study architect not from California, left a 40-year legacy in the Phoenix area. You'd think every architect and interior designer in the Sonoran Desert would want to own a copy of this book!
Does anyone have any ideas about a mutually beneficial collaboration to help disseminate this revised and updated second edition?

Book Readied for the Press.......................... Release Celebration Announced
As the second edition of "Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle" is finalized for the press, plans have been set for release of this tremendous resource. Mark your calendars now for this event. The book will be available, along with the film, "beadlearchitecture" and an opportunity to meet Al's beloved wife Nancy Beadle, as we mark the 10th anniversary this year of the passing of this famed icon.
WHO: hosted by Gnosis, Ltd., Nancy Beadle, Eddie Jones/Jones Studio, Inc. and Desert Living Magazine
WHAT: a Book Release Event celebrating a 2008 Gnosis publication: the second edition of ASU Professor B. Michael Boyle’s "Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle"
WHEN: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008
WHERE: in the courtyard of the Beadle-designed office complex at 4450 North 12th Street, Phoenix, 85014
WHY: to announce the availability of a book that illustrates the indelible mark of this Regional Master Architect on Arizona’s landscape
Major support for this project comes from Jones Studio, American Institute of Architects Phoenix Metro, Corporate Interior Systems and Arizona Commission on the Arts.
Modernist architect Al Beadle (1927 – 1998), who created a new vocabulary for building on challenging sites in the harsh, arid landscape of the majestic Sonoran Desert, left a 40-year legacy in the Valley. Much of his built environment is undocumented and few resources referencing his work are available.
Originally published in 1993 in a very small edition, Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle is a long out-of-print book still in demand, no doubt because awareness of the importance of his work in the history of modern building has spread from the narrower professional community to the wider public and is still growing.

EXCITING NEWS TO SHARE!!!
We are getting close to the point of being able to send our Beadle book to the printer. It will be available in time for this year’s holiday season for those who want to gift friends with a truly important book. The second edition of "Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle" will become a true resource for all those who honor or want to research the accomplishments of this Arizona icon. Beadle is one of the fathers of architecture in Phoenix.

For your $125 contribution, we will publish your name in the book and mail you a copy upon publication. And, as a Friend of Gnosis, we will count you as a paid member of this small Arizona-based, non-profit educational arts and culture organization. The book’s value is $40 + $4 for shipping and handling. The $81 balance of your contribution will be allocated to Constructions publication costs. Spring Has Sprung and Gnosis Offers More Thanks
We just received word from the American Institute of Architects/Central Phoenix chapter that their board voted to underwrite $5,000 toward our latest project, the creation of a second edition of "Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle."
Generous $5,000 contributions also have come in from Jones Studio and Corporate Interior Systems, and there aren't enough words of thanks and appreciation for these Gnosis ambassadors. Such sponsorships, in addition to the many personal donations that have been made, are a tribute to Al and the 40-year legacy he left in the Valley. The response to this project has been far reaching with monies coming in from across the country. For Suzanne, it has been a bit emotionally overwhelming, actually.
I know it sounds like we are "rolling in dough" but honestly, all the money we receive goes back into Gnosis projects and thankfully we endure. Please realize though, we are continuing to seek grants and other donations to support this project because we are still short of our budget.
On another happy note, the Gnosis documentary "Pedro E. Guerrero: Portrait of an Image Maker" was screened before a close-to-full house at the Phoenix Art Museum on behalf of the Contemporary Forum. More thanks here to them for the opportunity to showcase the work and heart of the amazing Pedro The Great.
Know Gnosis: Without you, there would be no Gnosis. Thank you, thank you for your support and good cheer. We'll keep you posted on upcoming plans for this small-but-mighty organization.

Still Slogging Away
Alas, we are facing struggles with funding for printing the 2nd edition of “Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle.” While we know the importance of Beadle and his work, and many of you have provided smaller amounts of support as you could, we still need a couple of major sponsors to produce this out-of-print, in-demand book, which will have an updated introduction and bibliography.
For $5,000 we offer 50 copies of the book with your organization’s logo on the back cover so that you may distribute “Constructions” to your clients as you please. What a deal – being part of preserving a history that no longer exists in written form and helping make the book accessible to the many legions of people who have been requesting it.
As a supporter of Gnosis since its inception, I have personally watched Suzanne produce astounding works that capture history, heritage, and art. Never has this non-profit turned a dime – Suzanne has kept it going with her sheer determination and deep love for the humanities and arts.
Please take a moment to consider, or re-consider, the benefits you can bring to yourself and this project with your support.
With regards,
Jeri Robertson

Thank You for the Gifts You Are Giving
One of the most difficult challenges facing our organization is garnering the funds to see projects, such as this one, through to fruition. Non-profits exist in all areas of our society and the work of the people representing these groups is truly amazing - share your gift and you too can know the reward of creating enduring legacies of the creative spirits in our world. Check out the projects/events section of our web site to learn more about Alfred Beadle.
Please consider this:
CONSTRUCTIONS will retail at $40/per copy + shipping and handling.
For your donation of $125, you reap the following benefits:
--Gnosis will publish your name as a supporter in this reprint.
--A copy of this significant resource will be provided to you upon publication.
--As a Friend of Gnosis, we’ll count you as a paid 2008 member of our non-profit. (Gnosis members get discounts on products and for-sale items, entry to events, etc., plus the membership donation is tax deductible)!
Thank you is a simple phrase but it is a truly heart-felt sentiment to our benefactors.

Video Explores Work and Career of Architect John Lautner
The Spirit in Architecture, a film by by Bette Jane Cohen, examines the work of John Lautner, one of the most visionary and profound architects, who began his career in Los Angeles in the 1930s. This illuminating journey into Lautner's world features never before seen footage from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin; extensive documentation of his extraordinary buildings; and interviews with historians, critics, collaborators, clients, and Lautner himself, which put his achievements in perspective. The use of his buildings in feature films and his "Googie" coffee shop design together demonstrate his contribution to popular culture.
Purchase the film on VHS at the Gnosis Store.
Reconstructing Constructions

about the HT2 Tour
The 2007 Tour is again a two-day celebration of custom designed architects' and designers' personal residences. The Symposium on Friday evening, hosted by ASU's Mark Ryan and Michael Underhill (both practitioners as well as teachers), will address what will be seen over the weekend, what's interesting about these spaces. The self-drive Tour offers (5) houses for viewing on Saturday and (5) other houses on Sunday; doors are open from 10:00am - 5:00pm.
Here's a buzz I'd like you to help me propagate:
The monies we raise are to be allocated to our next project. Our goal is to reprint the coveted catalogue that has been long out of print: CONSTRUCTIONS, Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle V and after the HT2 commotion dies down, I'm jumping all over this ...
... and, okay, okay, Eddie, I will look into coordinating a trip to Cuba ... who wants to go?! Meanwhile, requests for a Marfa rendez-vous have come in. And, I've promised a Taliesin Apprentices trip to Mexico City.
Needless to say, I've mulling over our next doc, too.
