Still Slogging Away

Your Gnosis Army of one (Founder and Director Suzanne D. Johnson) is devoting her days to fine tuning details for the Beadle book project and for Gnosis’ latest architectural tour in Mexico City.

Alas, we are facing struggles with funding for printing the 2nd edition of “Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle.” While we know the importance of Beadle and his work, and many of you have provided smaller amounts of support as you could, we still need a couple of major sponsors to produce this out-of-print, in-demand book, which will have an updated introduction and bibliography.

For $5,000 we offer 50 copies of the book with your organization’s logo on the back cover so that you may distribute “Constructions” to your clients as you please. What a deal – being part of preserving a history that no longer exists in written form and helping make the book accessible to the many legions of people who have been requesting it.

As a supporter of Gnosis since its inception, I have personally watched Suzanne produce astounding works that capture history, heritage, and art. Never has this non-profit turned a dime – Suzanne has kept it going with her sheer determination and deep love for the humanities and arts.

We Are Seeking Grants

Individuals continue to show their support for the Alfred Newman Beadle "Constructions" reprint. We are excited to be moving forward with this project but still need funds to see it through to completion. We have been submitting grant applications to state and national organizations as well as family foundations. The grant process is very involved and somewhat intense at times, but it is a necessary component to our success. We are always on the lookout for new resources so if you know of one, let us know…

Video Explores Work and Career of Architect John Lautner

The Spirit in Architecture, a film by by Bette Jane Cohen, examines the work of John Lautner, one of the most visionary and profound architects, who began his career in Los Angeles in the 1930s. This illuminating journey into Lautner's world features never before seen footage from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin; extensive documentation of his extraordinary buildings; and interviews with historians, critics, collaborators, clients, and Lautner himself, which put his achievements in perspective. The use of his buildings in feature films and his "Googie" coffee shop design together demonstrate his contribution to popular culture.

about the HT2 Tour

This is the second ARCHITECTS' & DESIGNERS' OWN HOMES TOUR (hence, we reference it as "HT2") produced by this small-but-mighty arts and humanities nonprofit organization. The first one was in 2002 and too bad if you missed it! The featured homes were stellar and the experience was truly great for all involved. As unique as this particular event is, how could Gnosis resist the opportunity to coordinate another one? It's the only Valley-wide Tour that allows one to see how designers live when they build for themselves ... Ultimately, many of those ideas fermented in their own laboratories are revisited in the spaces they design for others.

The 2007 Tour is again a two-day celebration of custom designed architects' and designers' personal residences. The Symposium on Friday evening, hosted by ASU's Mark Ryan and Michael Underhill (both practitioners as well as teachers), will address what will be seen over the weekend, what's interesting about these spaces. The self-drive Tour offers (5) houses for viewing on Saturday and (5) other houses on Sunday; doors are open from 10:00am - 5:00pm.

Here's a buzz I'd like you to help me propagate:
The monies we raise are to be allocated to our next project. Our goal is to reprint the coveted catalogue that has been long out of print: CONSTRUCTIONS, Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle V and after the HT2 commotion dies down, I'm jumping all over this ...

... and, okay, okay, Eddie, I will look into coordinating a trip to Cuba ... who wants to go?! Meanwhile, requests for a Marfa rendez-vous have come in. And, I've promised a Taliesin Apprentices trip to Mexico City.

Needless to say, I've mulling over our next doc, too.
